New details have emerged about the night Memphis officers fatally beat Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop last month.
Documents released Tuesday detailed the “blatantly unprofessional” conduct of five officers involved in the incident, which left Nichols dead days later. Among the revelations in the report, it was revealed that officer Demetrius Haley took and shared photos of a brutally beaten Nichols.
According to the report released by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission, Haley stood over Nichols as he laid propped against a police car and took pictures, and then sent them to other officers and a female acquaintance.
This was just one of the allegations among many laid out in the internal documents that accused Haley and the other officers of unjustly conduct and policy violations the day they stopped and fatally beat Nichols. The report also said the officers pulled Nichols over without telling him the reason for the stop, used excessive force, obscured their body-worn cameras, and laughed and bragged about the beating, among other serious accusations.
“Your on-duty conduct was unjustly, blatantly unprofessional and unbecoming for a sworn public servant,” the Memphis Police Department wrote in requesting that Haley and the other officers be decertified.
As previously reported, all five officers– Tadarrius Bean, Emmitt Martin III, Justin Smith, Desmond Mills Jr. and Demetrius Haley– have all been fired and charged with second-degree murder. A sixth officer was also fired last week and just this Tuesday, the Memphis city attorney announced that seven additional officers are expected to face administrative discipline related to this case.
