Two men were taken into custody in India after getting caught on viral video dumping their relative killed by COVID-19 into a local river.
Sanjay Kumar and Manoj Kumar were both charged after a witness passing by posting a video of the sick act on Saturday, India Today reported.
The camera footage shows the two — one wearing a protective bodysuit — in the rain on a bridge, preparing to dump the body into the Rapti River.
Police identified the victim as Premnath but have not disclosed his relationship to the suspects. He was admitted to a nearby hospital on May 25 after testing positive for the virus.
Instead of taking the body to be cremated, the family decided to dump it.
The incident comes two weeks after more than 70 bodies were found floating in the Ganga River, which authorities suspect were similar to this case—victims of the virus.
India has been ravaged by a surge in COVID-19 cases, overwhelming its local health care system and prompted mass cremations.
