U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers made a drug bust at the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego, seizing a truckload of methamphetamine that had been cleverly disguised as a shipment of watermelons.
The bust occurred on August 16 when a tractor-trailer arriving from Mexico was selected for a detailed inspection.
During the search, CBP officers discovered 4,587 pounds of methamphetamine hidden among real watermelons. The meth, which had an estimated street value of over $5 million, was packaged in 1,220 bundles wrapped in paper designed to look like watermelon rinds.
The driver of the truck was taken into custody and handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further questioning.
