Method Man Reflects on Lifelong Battle with Depression That 'Never Really Goes Away'

Method Man recently shed light on his remarks about his experience at this year’s Summer Jam Festival. Speaking with TMZ on Saturday (June 8), the Wu-Tang Clan rapper explained that he doesn’t blame the younger audience for their reaction to his performance with Redman. His primary goal was to support Mister Cee and New York.

“I wasn’t mad at the crowd,” Method Man clarified. “It was just a generation gap. I showed grace.”

He did, however, express that some of the criticism he received felt unwarranted. “I don’t think it’s fair. I would never point my finger at the crowd for not liking my music… I was there for Mister Cee and it was New York. I figured, I’m in New York, I’m in my backyard. [People] know who I am.”

Following his performance, Method Man took to social media to share his thoughts on the crowd’s response. “Not our crowd at all,” he commented on an Instagram post of his performance. “Thanks again, New York and the whole tri-state (that showed up to the event) plus Peter [Rosenberg] and Ebro [Darden] I got love for you guys, but never again.. at this point the generation gap is just too wide for me.. #nevercomingback.”

On Tuesday (June 4), TMZ also spoke with Soulja Boy in Los Angeles about the situation. “I don’t think he meant that. He probably was just in his feelings,” Soulja Boy said. “He probably gonna perform at a future event, you know what I’m saying? But shout out to him. People got different … I don’t know. That’s New York, though. Everybody supposed to know who he is.”

He added, “It don’t matter. That’s crazy. I didn’t know that. There probably was a lot of young people in the audience. Shout out to him. He’s definitely a legend, for sure. He’s entitled to respond however he feels like. It’s gonna be all good.”

Method Man’s comments underscore the challenges posed by generational differences in music preferences, but his commitment to supporting his peers and hometown remains unwavering.
