Miami Beach isn’t what it used to be. City officials have had enough and want to cancel spring break.
On Wednesday, City Manager Alina Hudak signed off on a state of emergency as “massive crowds” of Spring Breakers gathered in the area, causing chaos. There have also been two fatal shootings this season, United Press International, Inc. reported.
Under the declaration, officials have the authority to impose measures “to protect the health and safety of persons and property.”
Officials recently restricted alcohol sales but rejected the proposal to enforce a curfew.
Hudak references the 90,000 residents who live in the Miami Beach area, which has become an “international renowned tourist destination” that has continued to grapple with “unruly crowd control issues” since March 2021.
Among the crimes, Miami Beach reports four arrests for aggravated assault and three for aggravated battery. There have also been seven arrests for robbery, 20 arrests for carrying a concealed firearm, and 37 felony drug arrests.
Police officers are having difficulty controlling the crowd, with at least 12 people arrested for battery of a law enforcement officer.
Mayor Dan Gelber says the city is considering shutting down the remainder of Spring Break after a group of local bar and nightclub owners swayed the majority of city council members to block his proposal to enforce another midnight curfew this past weekend.
