The nephew of actor Michael K. Williams has broken his silence about the moment he found his uncle dead from a drug overdose.
Dominic Dupont joined the latest episode of Red Table Talk, speaking for the first time publicly about his uncle’s untimely death in September. He explained that he immediately noticed how silent it was when he arrived at his uncle’s Brooklyn penthouse.
“It was quiet. Michael always played music. That wasn’t the case,” Dupont recalled. He then stuck his head in the door and called out to his uncle before seeing him dead. He immediately called 911, who asked if he wanted to try compressions. Sadly, Dupont knew immediately that Williams was deceased.
Dupont also said that prior to his death, there was nothing to indicate that his uncle had begun using drugs again. However, his flawless acting capabilities likely allowed him to hide his resurfaced addiction.
“Michael also worked really hard not to have the things that he was going through weigh on other people. And he was an actor, right? And you can fool people. You can convince people that you’re OK,” he shared.
The New York City chief medical examiner determined that “The Wire” star died from an accidental overdose by ingesting fentanyl-laced heroin and cocaine. Four men have since been charged in connection with his death. Dupont says he is “positive” his uncle would have never taken the drugs had he known they were laced with the potent narcotic.
Dupont hopes that speaking out on Williams’ death will bring awareness about the dangers of fentanyl-laced substances.
