Michael Vick will return to his roots as the new head coach of Norfolk State University’s football team, as first reported by The Virginian-Pilot. A former high school star at Ferguson and Warwick High Schools in Virginia, Vick is set to lead the Spartans and aim for their first FCS playoff appearance since 2011.
Vick also confirmed that he has withdrawn from consideration for the head coaching position at Sacramento State, which had already raised $20 million in NIL funding to boost its football program and prepare for a potential move to the Mountain West or Western Athletic Conference.
Announcing the news on Facebook, Vick expressed his excitement about the opportunity to return home.
“It’s an honor to announce that I’ll be the new head coach of Norfolk State University,” Vick shared in his post. “Looking forward to coming back home.”
While Norfolk State has yet to release an official statement, The Virginian-Pilot reported that an introductory press conference is scheduled for next week. This move brings significant attention to the historic HBCU located in Virginia. Vick’s stature as a generational talent is expected to bring respect and excitement to the program, especially within the local community.
The former number-one overall pick of the 2001 NFL Draft is still celebrated as one of the best quarterbacks of his era. His career, marked by exceptional talent and hard-earned lessons, positions him to lead and inspire the next generation of athletes. Vick has also indicated plans to surround himself with a seasoned coaching staff to help steer the Spartans toward success.
