Michelle Obama is looking to provide more than 1 million meals to families in need with her new “Pass the Love w/ Waffles + Mochi” campaign.
The nonprofit campaign will launch in conjunction with Mrs. Obama’s new children’s food show ”Waffles + Mochi,” which premiered on Netflix Tuesday. The new series is a collaborative project between the Obama’s company, Higher Ground Productions, and Partnership for a Healthier America. The show is centered around two puppet buddies who “travel the world exploring the wonders of food and culture while learning how to cook with fresh ingredients.”
Blue Apron and Walmart have also joined the “Pass the Love” initiative. Both companies will raise money from their customers to go towards the campaign. According to the former first lady, the overall goal is to make sure families across the country can access nutritious meals during the pandemic, when many families are struggling to keep food on the table.
Nancy Roman, PHA President, and CEO, told The Associated Press that both companies would contribute funds to the operation raised partially by their customers.
Genuine Foods has been charged with assembling the campaign’s meal boxes, which will be distributed to families in need by local nonprofits in various cities. The campaign will focus largely on the cities with the highest child poverty rates and conduct four-week rollouts beginning in May.
