Former First Lady Michelle Obama confirmed on her Instagram account that she is “doing just fine” following her recent statement about depression.
“I just wanted to check in with you all because a lot of you have been checking in on me after hearing this week’s podcast,” she wrote. “First things first—I’m doing just fine.”
Michelle reassured that there is no reason to worry. Instead of thinking about herself, Michelle said she is thinking about the essential workers, protestors, teachers, students, and parents during this tough time.
“I’m thinking about the folks out there risking themselves for the rest of us—the doctors and nurses and essential workers of all kinds. I’m thinking about the teachers and students and parents who are just trying to figure out school for the fall. I’m thinking about the people out there protesting and organizing for a little more justice in our country.”
Our forever first lady encouraged everyone to allow themselves to react to their feelings during these unprecedented times.
“The idea that what this country is going through shouldn’t affect us—that we all should just feel OK all the time—that just doesn’t feel real to me … I hope you all are allowing yourselves to feel whatever it is you’re feeling.”
In addition to thanking those who reached out to her regarding her well-being, Mrs. Obama advised them to reach out to their close loved ones as well.
“Don’t be afraid to offer them a should to lean on or to ask for one yourself,” she said. “Love you all.”
The warm, sincere message came nearly a day after she revealed that she is suffering from a “low-grade depression” during her new podcast Wednesday.
“These are not [they are not] fulfilling times, spiritually, Michelle said. “So, I know I am dealing with some form of low-grade depression.”
Due to the racial, political, and health crises going on across the world, Michelle shared, on her “The Michelle Obama Podcast,” that she experiences trouble sleeping at night.
“I’m waking up in the middle of the night because I’m worrying about something or there’s a heaviness. I try to make sure I get a workout in, although there have been periods throughout this quarantine, where I just have felt too low.”
Also on her podcast, Michelle addressed the tragic police killing of George Floyd, stating that it is “exhausting” to be “waking up to yet another story of a Black man or a Black person somehow being dehumanized, or hurt, or killed, or falsely accused of something.”
Addressing the global pandemic, Michelle said, “we are in a unique moment in history… We are living through something that no one in our lifetimes has lived through.”
