As our forever first lady, Michelle Obama, embarks on her book tour to promote her New York Times bestseller, you may hear some of your favorite tunes. Questlove orchestrated the compilation of tracks.
The three-part playlist entitled “The Michelle Obama Musiaqualogy,” which features songs by Sam Cooke, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, George Benson, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, D’Angelo and more, is now available to stream on Spotify and Pandora.
“Like a lot of people, I connect many of my memories with the songs and melodies I was listening to at the time,” Mrs. Obama explained in a statement to Billboard. “From the jazz and Stevie Wonder of my childhood, to Prince and Earth, Wind & Fire as I came into my own as an adult, to Beyoncé, Janelle Monáe, and so many others who provided the stirring backbeats of my time in the White House — music has always been a defining part of who I’ve become,” she added.
Michelle Obama’s new book “Becoming,” digs into the life of what seemed to be a perfect Michelle but not so perfect after all. The forever first lady highlighted and embraced her flaws in the book to show everyone that she’s just like one of us. Therefore, the soundtrack was so important to be derived from her roots.
“That’s why I’m so thankful to Questlove for curating these playlists and infusing them with his signature style. Life’s a little better when we live it to Questlove’s beat,” Mrs. Obama told Billboard.
