A Michigan hospital system is investigating after photos surfaced on Instagram of doctors posing with fibroid tissue and an organ removed during a surgical procedure.
According to local outlet Wood-TV, one picture showed a doctor posing with the fibrous tissue while the patient was still lying on the operating table.
“Longest one wins! Good work,” wrote the person who posted the picture of the fibroid tissue.
Another photo showed a doctor with an organ that had been removed during cancer surgery.
“The other game we play in the OR is guess that weight,” wrote the person who posted the organ photo. “It applies to much more than just babies. As always, ‘Price is Right’ rules apply so if you go over then you’re out!”
The group behind the photos is about 35 OB/GYN residents from all over the country who are in training at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids.
“The privacy of patients and the confidentiality of their medical information is a priority at Spectrum Health,” the health system said in a statement. “We were disappointed to learn that surgical images were posted on an Instagram account used by a group of residents and are taking steps to resolve this issue. These posts do not follow our code of excellence or our expectations for team member behavior.”
The controversial Instagram page was not officially connected to Spectrum Health and was removed on Friday.
