A Michigan woman is facing prison time after hiring an assassin through a fake website to kill her ex-husband.Â
Wendy Wein, 52, pleaded guilty last month to solicitation to commit murder and illegal use of a computer to facilitate a crime. She admitted to using “Rent-A-Hitman,” a fictional website offering professional hitman services.
In July of 2020, Wein requested a consultation by filling out a form on the website. She believed she was contacting the site’s chief consultant Guido Fanelli.
“This is kind of weird that your company is not on the deep or dark web,” she wrote in her message, according to CNN. “I prefer not going to jail. Thanks for your time.”
Instead, she was messaging the site’s owner, Bob Innes. Innes runs the site to fool people looking to hire contract killers. Once he receives an inquiry, he waits 24 hours to see if the person has “cooled off” before contacting authorities.
He reached out to Wein after the 24 hours and asked if she was still interested, to which she replied she was. Innes gave her information to Michigan State Police, and they sent a plainclothes officer to meet with Wein. The undercover officer met Wein in a parking lot in South Rockwood. She offered him $5,000 to kill her ex, with $200 upfront in travel expenses. Wein was taken into custody at the meeting.
She is scheduled to be sentenced in January and faces nine years in prison. Â
