After mistaking a tube of nail glue for her eye drops, a Michigan woman is fortunate to still be able to see.
According to, Yacedrah Williams glued her eye shut last Thursday when she used adhesive designed to patch torn fingernails instead of lubricating eye drops for her contact lens.
Williams told Detroit-based news outlet WXYZ, that she woke up with dry eyes in the middle of the night and decided to take out her contacts.
She reached for her bag where she kept her eye drops, but accidentally pulled out a bottle of nail glue that was around the same size.
Just as the liquid dropped through her eye, Williams realized she picked up the wrong bottle.
“I was like, ‘Oh my goodness!’ ” she recalled. “It dropped in my eye and I tried to wipe it away.”
But it was too late; her eye had been sealed shut. Williams said that she became panicked and yelled for her husband to dial 911.
“It sealed my eyes shut,” Williams remembered. “I just started throwing cold water, and I was trying to pull my eyes apart but couldn’t.”
“It was completely shut,” she added.
Doctors were able to open Williams’ eye and remove the glue-encrusted contact lens after she was rushed to the hospital.
Williams’ vision was unaffected by the ordeal, but she did lose some of her eyelashes.
“They said that actually, the contacts saved my vision,” she told WXYZ. “They had to pull on it and flip the top of my lid.”
Williams promised after the terrifying incident that she would “never” keep her eye drops and nail glue in the same purse again.
She said, “I don’t think I’ll even have nail glue anymore.”
