The Minneapolis fatal shooting of a local resident during a confrontation with federal immigration agents has pushed the city into another weekend of unrest.

Early Saturday, a 37-year-old Minneapolis man was killed in a struggle with federal officers, marking the second fatal shooting by federal forces in the city this month. The incident has intensified the standoff between local leadership and the Trump administration’s massive immigration surge.

Mayor Jacob Frey spoke out against the operation during a press conference, specifically calling out the tactics used by the agents. “I just saw a video of more than six masked agents pummeling one of our constituents and shooting him to death. How many more residents? How many more Americans need to die or get badly hurt for this operation to end?” Frey demanded.

The Mayor also used the moment to respond to JD Vance, who visited the city earlier this week to allege that local officials were failing to “turn down the temperature.” Frey pointed to the peaceful nature of his constituents, noting that 15,000 people marched on Friday without a single report of violence or vandalism. “I’m done being told that our community members are responsible for the vitriol in our streets. I’m done being told that our local elected officials are solely responsible for turning down the temperature,” Frey stated.

While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) alleged that the man “approached US Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun” and “violently resisted” during a disarmament attempt, local law enforcement provided a very different profile of the victim.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara clarified that the man was a 37-year-old white Minneapolis resident and, to their knowledge, an American citizen.

“We believe he is a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry,” Chief O’Hara said, emphasizing that the victim’s only prior interaction with police involved traffic tickets. Under Minnesota state law, residents are permitted to open carry handguns as long as they hold a valid permit.

The fatal encounter on Saturday follows the January 7 shooting of Renee Good by an ICE officer, an event that has turned the Twin Cities into a national flashpoint. DHS has stood by its officers, claiming they are acting in self-defense against “dangerous rioters,” while Mayor Frey and Governor Tim Walz have characterized the federal presence as a “federal invasion” that is actively undermining public safety.

DHS officials say more details regarding the “armed struggle” are forthcoming, but for the people of Minneapolis, the cost of the federal operation is already far too high.
