In the city first police-involved death since George Floyd’s murder, a Minneapolis police officer shot and killed a man police claims opened fire on officers during a traffic stop on Wednesday night.
This shooting reignites tensions in a city still deeply affected by the police killing of George Floyd last May and the political unrest from protests that followed.
“Initial witness statements indicate that the subject involved in this felony stop fired first at Minneapolis police officers,” Chief Medaria Arradondo said.
According to CNN, this shooting occurred about a mile away from the site of Floyd’s death. After the shooting, residents quickly assembled near the scene of the shooting, as city officials appealed for calm and promised a transparent investigation where they will disclose details.
“I want the community to be able to see what occurred, and I think that that is part of us again moving forward and wanting to make sure we get the facts out there,” the chief said.
Arradondo said he would release video from the officers’ body cameras on Thursday.
