The Miss World 2021 pageant reportedly lost millions after being canceled due to the spread of COVID-19 amongst the contestants.
The pageant was set to start on December 16th in Puerto Rico. However, hours before showtime, a last-minute cancellation happened after more than 20 girls tested positive for the virus. The news not only took a jab at the contestants that were ready to take the stage but the production team as well.
According to Page Six, a source affiliated with the pageant says the annual event lost millions of dollars because of the cancellation. “They lost … the millions in set cost to produce the pageant.” The production cost is estimated to be around $5 million.
Reports show that 23 out of the 97 contestants and approximately 15 staff members tested positive for COVID-19. Pageant judge and beauty guru Peter Thomas Roth says when he arrived a few days early, “eight of the girls had already tested positive.”
Now the COVID-19 may have been a worry of the pageant but it sure wasn’t the only one. Apparently, the power kept going out at the hotel where the event was being held.
According to Peter, “Everything kept getting postponed because the hotel power kept going out and they didn’t have a generator. Events were late a few hours because the girls needed to do hair and makeup and need electricity.”
Nevertheless, the show will still happen but on March 16 at the Puerto Rico Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot.
A pageant rep says, “We are sure the event will be a huge success in March. And we thank everyone for their support and understanding.”
