The US Army revealed that Sgt. Elder Fernandes, the 23-year-old Fort Hood Solider, was transferred to a different unit because of his involvement in an “abusive sexual contact.” He was the victim.
Fernandes was last seen being dropped off at his home and has been missing since Monday. Concerned that his disappearance may have to do with his assault, the Army assured the public they did everything in their power to care for Fernandes properly.
“The sexual assault response coordinator has been working closely with Sgt. Fernandes, ensuring he was aware of all his reporting, care, and victim advocacy options,” Lt. Col Chris Brautigam said. “The unit also facilitated his transfer from a unit who has recently deployed to a different unit within the brigade to ensure he received the proper care and ensure there were no opportunities for reprisals.”
With no leads onto Fernandes’ whereabouts, the US Army is seeking the public’s help. EquuSearch, a nonprofit, recently joined search efforts.
“Our primary concern is for his health and well-being,” the US Army released in a statement. Finding him is a “top priority for the Division.”
The family of Fernandes finds this very unusual. Just last Friday, he talked with his aunt, where he promised to call his mother on Sunday and Monday. When he didn’t call Monday, “and he didn’t answer calls from anyone else” on Monday or Tuesday, the family became concerned. His aunt told KTRK that his mother flew down to Fort Hood, and they still have yet to hear from him.
Fort Hood has had several mysterious vanishings this year. While some involved foul play, in the case of Sgt. Fernandes, it is not suspected.
If anyone has seen Fernandes or knows where he might be, contact Kileen police, military police at Fort Hood, or there Army’s Criminal Investigation Command.
