The collegiate football world is mourning the loss of another promising player following a gun accident.

Missouri State University safety Todric McGee passed away early Saturday morning at just 21 years old. The university confirmed he passed away at a hospital from injuries sustained at his home. Police told The Springfield News-Leader that responding officers found McGee on Friday morning during a wellness check with a “possible accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

“On behalf of the university and our entire department, we want to express our condolences to Todric’s family, friends, and teammates,” said Missouri State Director of Athletics Patrick Ransdell. “This tragedy has shaken our football program to the core, and we want them to know we are here to support them in every way possible at this extremely difficult time.”

“Our football family is in shock and mourning at the loss of Todric,” added head coach Ryan Beard. “We ask everyone to please respect the privacy of his family and our MoState football team at this time as we begin the healing process. Join us in praying for Todric and the people who loved him.”

A Wichita, Kansas, native and graduate of Wichita Northwest High School, McGee was preparing for his fifth season with the Bears. He served as the team’s starting safety in 2023 and 2024, earning all-conference honors before his latest season was cut short by injury.

His untimely passing follows that of former LSU star Kyren Lacy, who took his own life on April 12th, months after being charged in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash.  It’s unclear how authorities concluded that the McGee shooting was accidental. However, the investigation remains ongoing with more details likely to arise in the coming days.
