Kathy Jenkins received backlash when a video of her attending a Black Lives Matter Protest with a Confederate flag and “Make America Great Again” apparel surfaced the internet. Not only did Jenkins waive a controversial flag, but she also antagonized peaceful protesters.
In the viral video, Jenkins pledged to teach her grandchildren to hate people of color, after yelling “KKK belief.”
“I’m teaching them to fucking hate all of you people,” she said.
The HuffPost reported that Jenkins’ hate speech resulted in the loss of her job. Now, she has apologized and vowed never to wave the Confederate flag again.
Despite her apology, Jenkins said she is unaware of the racist comments she made because she “blacked out” during the event.
According to Ozarks First, Jenkins admitted that she was also oblivious to the Confederate flag’s history and never knew that it symbolized hatred.
Although some protesters have forgiven Jenkins for her actions, others rejected her apology.
Kenidra Woods, an advocate for mental health, tweeted that Jenkins’ apology does not appear genuine. Woods followed by stating that Jenkins hurt her to her core when she vowed to teach her grandchildren hate.
Protest organizer Faith Pittser said she does not believe Jenkins’ statements were unintentional and misconstrued. In fact, in an interview with Ozarks First, Pittser said Jenkins “knew exactly what she was doing,” as she was shouting obscenities and hateful words at our protesters from the start of the event, Pittser said.
