As the coronavirus pandemic sweeps across the country, Utah senator Mitt Romney has proposed a plan that would help offset the financial burden the outbreak has created.
Romney released a statement on Monday urging the United States government to give every citizen $1,000 during this period of the social distancing.
“Every American adult should immediately receive $1,000 to help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy,” the press release reads per BuzzFeed.
This proposal is similar to entrepreneur Andrew Yang’s Democratic presidential campaign. Before dropping out of the race, Yang proposed that Americans should receive $1,000 a month to help boost the economy.
With the stock market dropping to new lows, this social isolation couldn’t have come at a worse time for the country.
Yang sent out tweets on Monday that doubled down on the necessity of his campaign promise.
What exactly is the political downside of putting money into people’s hands? Get your shit together Congress and do the right thing.

Markets down 10%. No one thinks that what Congress is doing is sufficient to prevent a deep recession or worse. Congress needs to think much bigger about what is happening here. This is an economic blackout for an extended period of time on a society-wide scale. Wider than 2008.

The problem is not today (though today is not great). It’s 2 weeks from now. 4 weeks from now. 8 weeks from now. 12 weeks from now. Think about the situations millions of families on the financial precipice will be in at each point in time unless something big is done.
