A new mom in Brazil has given birth to twins with different fathers after having too much fun several months ago.
According to news outlet Globo, the unidentified 19-year-old in Mineiros grew suspicious over the paternity of her twin boys nearing their first birthday. She decided to take a paternity test, initially only suspecting one of the men as being the father of both children. However, the test only came back positive for one of the boys.
“I remembered that I had had sex with another man and called him to take the test, which was positive,” the young woman told the outlet.
Her attending physician, Dr. Tulio Jorge Franco, confirmed the incident and said that while extremely rare, the occurrence is possible.
“The babies share the mother’s genetic material, but they grow in different placentas,” Franco explained to Globo. This event, often referred to as heteropaternal superfecundation, happens when a second ova released during the menstrual cycle is fertilized by the sperm cells of a different male during a different sexual encounter. This is considered a “one in a million” chance.
The twins are now 16 months old, and according to their mother, only one of the fathers is active in his child’s life.
