Actress/Comedian Mo’Nique finally answers the question that has been on everyone’s mind, why did she agree to have an open marriage with her husband? In the first episode of “Mo’Nique and Sidney’s Open Relationship,” the actress explains her relationship and that it was her idea, not her husband’s.
Mo’Nique explains that when she got with her husband, another man was in love with her. She explained to her future husband that she essentially wanted to continue dating the other man she was with and her husband obliged.
“I think that a lot of people took it as here’s this fat black woman who has this good looking man and now she’s going to let him do whatever he wants to do for the sake of saying she has this good looking man,” said Mo’Nique. “What’s funny is when you pull up celebrities and open marriages and you see Will and Jada, whoever the author of that article says, “Well we can understand. They’re beautiful people,” when you pull up Brad and Angelina they say, ‘We can understand. They’re beautiful people,” but moment to get to my damn picture they talking about, ‘Awww. We hope Mo’Nique not gone let him do her like that.”
Mo’Nique clarifies that she doesn’t know for a fact that Will & Jada or Brad & Angelina are in an open relationship, but that’s just an example of an article she’s seen. “Society looks at me and they see a woman that looks like [she] couldn’t possibly have a man that looks like that if there was not something else involved in it…she’s gonna let this man do anything he wants to do because she’s famous and she has money and now she can have whatever she wants, but she’s gonna let the man use her and abuse her. And no one knew it was not Sidney’s idea to have an open marriage. It was mine! And initially when I said it, I had the attitude that whoever makes the money, makes the rules.”
Mo’Nique says that when her husband asked to date outside the marriage, she initially didn’t want that, but eventually she realized if she was allowed to date outside the marriage, he should too.
Mo’Nique has previously said on Periscope that the open marriage was her idea, not her husband’s. “Originally it was my idea because at the time when Sid and I got together 10 years ago — now keep in mind this was my best friend since I was 14 — but when we first got together I was still stuck in being famous and a celebrity and being a star, and I felt like I could have whatever I want. So I was still in an insecure place of, ‘I can have that, I can have that, I can have that.’ And because I was dealing with my best friend, my best friend said, ‘If that’s what you think you need, as your best friend, I don’t want to stand in the way of it.’”
