In addition to tragic fires, people in the Los Angeles area are now dealing with looters snooping around for any goods left behind.

Over 20 individuals have been arrested this week for alleged looting amid the ongoing wildfires ravaging the region. Los Angeles Supervisor Kathryn Barger addressed the situation sternly, saying, “I promise you, you will be held accountable. Shame on those who are preying on our residents during this time of crisis.”

L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna also issued a warning, stating that anyone found in wildfire evacuation zones without proper authorization would face misdemeanor charges, while looters could face felony charges.

“If you are in one of these areas and you do not belong there, you are going to be subject to arrest,” Luna said, emphasizing that the department’s priority wasn’t enforcement but rather helping residents.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has ramped up its efforts, with spokesperson Alejandra Parra also noting, “There is zero tolerance for looters.”

The ongoing fires have devastated the area, causing widespread destruction and claiming lives. Five deaths have been confirmed in the Eaton region, though that number could increase. Several other people have been injured, including a 25-year-old firefighter who sustained a serious head injury on January 7th. Several celebrities, including Jhene Aiko and Tina Knowles, have lost their homes in the fast-moving blaze.
