I mean, who wants to sit at a 90-degree angle? A recent survey discovered more than two-thirds of passengers think it’s rude to recline their airline seats.
The Vacationer’s study discovered that 77% of travelers surveyed said they find it rude to recline airline seats fully. Of those, more than 27% said they would ask the passenger behind them if it was ok before leaning back, while a little over 3% said they didn’t care and would recline without saying anything.
More than 22% of passengers surveyed said they didn’t think it was rude to lean back, and nearly 45% of passengers said they wouldn’t recline at all.
The survey also found other findings related to other controversial airplane behaviors, like armrest etiquette. Conventional practice has been to give the middle seat passenger both middle armrests, Travel + Leisure reported. But more than 63% of people said they either follow that rule of thumb or abide by it sometimes.
The survey also questioned travelers on coveted overhead bin space and found more than 57% of surveyed passengers said they would at least consider storing their luggage many rows in front of their seat. While 15.66% said, they always do this, a little more than 16% said they would do it only if they board late, and more than 25% said they would do it only if it was a full flight.
The issue of comfort was also surveyed, 63% of travelers questioned said they would never take their shoes off during a flight. But younger Americans between 18 to 29 years old are “much more likely” to remove their shoes, with over 45% saying they’ve done it.
And while all these practices are up to the passenger’s discretion, the survey found “seat kickers and disruptive drunks” were ranked as the most annoying among travelers.
The company polled more than 1,000 Americans in August for the survey.
