A mother from DeKalb County is accused of wheeling her daughter into an apartment closet and abandoning her in a stroller.
Court docs revealed that Alondra Hobbs is facing charges of felony murder and second-degree child cruelty in the death of Alivia Hobbs-Jordan.
Based on records, it is believed that Hobbs left her child in a closet sometime between late February and late June. Prosecutors claim that Hobbs placed the child in a stroller and rolled her into the closet where, tragically, the 7-year-old was found deceased on June 25th.
The warrants indicate that Hobbs deliberately shut the closet door, leaving the apartment with no intention of returning.
Last week, an anonymous neighbor came forward and revealed that he made a disturbing discovery. While walking back from a friend’s place in the afternoon, he noticed that the front door of a unit at Hidden Valley Apartments was wide open.
As the neighbor approached the open door, he detected a strong unpleasant smell. Upon entering, he observed that the residence was vacant, giving the impression that “someone left in a hurry.” It was at this point that he proceeded to the bedroom, where he discovered the closet door ajar and noticed a small human arm hanging from it.
“You could tell it was a young girl by what she had on and by her hair,” he said, adding it seemed the body had been in the closet for quite some time. “She looked like a mummy,” he said.
Five days later, Hobbs was arrested and charged. She made her first appearance in court on Wednesday.
Judge Williams was unable to set a bond for Hobbs during the proceedings and transferred the case to the superior court for resolution.
As a result, Hobbs will remain in custody at the DeKalb jail until further proceedings. The date for her probable cause hearing has yet to be determined.
