The former fiancée of Aaron Hernandez is being accused of misappropriating trust fund money meant to benefit the couple’s 10-year-old daughter, Avielle.
Per the arrangement, all money requested from the trust fund must be approved by the court-appointed trustee, attorney David Schwartz. According to recent court documents, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez’s legal team submitted an invoice requesting reimbursement from the fund for several large expenses. These included $17,000 in clothing, $10,000 for an entertainment and online shopping tab, $12,000 that was spent at HomeGoods, and another $11,792 that went towards “self-care,” which included gym fees and hair and nail salon costs.
Schwartz denied the request, raising new questions about whether or not she was spending the money recklessly. Back in September, the two quarreled when Jenkins-Hernandez requested $10,000 to pay for the child’s competitive dance lessons. Schwartz cited that since the mother of two gets approximately $150,000 yearly from the NFL pension and social security of Aaron Hernandez to cover Avielle’s daily expenses, such as school and housing, there should not be an issue surrounding the bill for the lessons. This dispute left Jenkins-Hernandez demanding that Schwartz be removed as the trustee, while he fired back asking that she be removed as the child’s conservator.
Robert O’Regan, another attorney who is representing Schwartz in the case, says there is “reason to question” how much of the money is truly going to benefit Avielle and how much is being used to fund Jenkins-Hernandez’s lifestyle.
“To be fair, this little girl should have a decent life with what her father left for her. No one would complain if there were reasonable expenses. We’re talking about over-the-top or otherwise unrelated expenses to Avielle,” O’Regan stated.
A nasty battle is now underway as both parties fight for control over the account funded by Aaron Hernandez’s time in the NFL. The former New England Patriots committed suicide in his jail cell in April 2017 after being convicted of killing Odin Lloyd. He had also been charged with double homicide for the drive-by shootings of Daniel Jorge Correia de Abreu and Safiro Teixeira Furtado but was acquitted of those murders.
