Mother Pays Son $1,800 to Stay Away From Social Media for 6 Years

A Minnesota teen is now $1,800 richer, thanks to an agreement he made with his mom to stay off social media until he was an adult.

The 18-year-old collected  $1,800 as promised for staying off social media for six years.

When Sivert Klefsaas was 12, he and his mother settled on the agreement, which she called the “18 for 18 challenge,” which guaranteed he would get $1,800 on his 18th birthday if he avoided social media.

Lorna Klefsaas proudly shared a picture of her son holding a phone and the check he earned, with the caption: “He turns 18 tomorrow. He will have $1800 in his pocket and new accounts on Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter!”

Momma Klefsaa told KARE, “He did really dig in. He was like, ‘I’m not breaking this.’ I’m proud of him, because there were a few times where it was harder.”

Klefsaa said she was inspired to create the challenge after hearing about a “16 for 16″ contest on the radio when a mother gave her daughter $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media.

Sivert told CNN it wasn’t too difficult for him to live without social media. He revealed he only had a Snapchat account before making the deal. He also said he kept up on pop culture and current events by turning to his friends to keep him up to date.
