A family is pleading for answers after a young mother was shot to death as she held her daughter in her arms.
K’Mia Simmons of St. Petersburg, Florida, was in the passenger seat of a vehicle on Tuesday evening. As the car sat at a stoplight, another car pulled up and opened fire, striking the 21-year-old mother of two. Miraculously, her 1-year-old daughter was not hit by any of the bullets. Her other daughter, who is 2-years-old, was seated in a car seat behind her and was not injured, though bullets did pierce the child’s seat.
The driver of the vehicle grabbed the children and fled from the car. He dropped the girls off with family members and has not since been located. Police now believe that he was the intended target and are looking to speak with him.
St. Petersburg leaders are begging for the driver to come forward. City Council Member Lisa Wheeler-Bowman read a Facebook post from the man who was allegedly behind the wheel of the car, where he called Simmons a “good girl” who went to school and did “whatever for her little girls.” She slammed the unidentified man for failing to help solve Simmons’ murder.
“You talk about all that, you know who’s after you, and you won’t come forward? Don’t blame my police officers, don’t blame me, blame yourself.”
According to her Facebook profile, Simmons had intentions of becoming a gynecologist. CrimeStoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in her murder.
