Mulatto is reportedly thinking about changing her name amid backlash from fans who say it perpetuates colorism.
During an interview with HipHopDX, the 21-year-old opened up about possibly making a big adjustment to her brand: changing her stage name.
“I can’t say too much because we’re working on something right now, but I would be lying to say it hasn’t crossed my mind before,” she told the outlet. “It is a controversy that I hear and see every day as far as my name goes, so I would be lying to say no, I never thought of that. But I can’t say too much because right now, it’s going to be a part of something bigger.”
Heat rose over her name after Mulatto clapped back at someone online who was criticizing the definition of it. The rapper was called out after saying she was Black but having previously said. She doesn’t refer to herself as Black or white but rather biracial. Someone suggested the rapper “wanna [be] black so bad,” and Mulatto. “I am black dumb ass bitch,” she replied. Afterward, people swarmed her responses, pointing out the hypocrisy behind what she calls herself on stage versus what she identifies with as a person of Black descent.
Mulatto says she wanted to “flip” the negative history of her name to a positive, saying she is “passionate” about her racial identity, Complex Media reports.
