Disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of killing his wife and son. He will now spend the rest of his life in prison.
After a six-week trial, a juror speaks out about a piece of evidence that convinced him Murdaugh was guilty, cell phone evidence.
Juror Craig Moyer told Good Morning America that prosecutors’ introduced the cell phone audio early in the trial.
“I was certain it was [Murdaugh’s] voice,” Moyer said. “Everybody else could hear [Murdaugh’s voice] too,” he added.
Prosecutor Creighton Waters revealed that Alex Murdaugh’s son Paul had taken a cellphone video near the dog kennels on the family’s Islandton property at 8:44 p.m. The night he and his mother were murdered. The video features the voices of Paul, Maggie–Alex’s Wife–and Alex.
That video was a key piece of evidence used to sway jurors, PEOPLE reported. Murdaugh had initially denied being near the dog kennels that tragic night.
Maggie and Paul were killed at the kennels shortly after that video was recorded. Paul was shot in the chest and head with a shotgun at close range, and Maggie was shot multiple times, including one shot in the back and additional shots while she was lying on the ground.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Paul claimed his innocence for two years, but during the trial, he testified that he had lied about his whereabouts that night.
“I lied about being down there, and I’m so sorry that I did,” Murdaugh said on the stand. Still, he denied shooting them.
According to Moyer, when jurors deliberated, they took a vote. Nine, including himself, believed Murdaugh was guilty, two thought he was innocent, and one was uncertain.
The jurors then reviewed the evidence again, unanimously agreeing that Murdaugh was guilty of murdering his wife and son.
Moyer said he thought Murdaugh was a “good liar, but not good enough.”
“I didn’t see any true remorse or any compassion or anything,” Moyer told GMA, referencing when Murdaugh took the stand in his own defense.
“He never cried,” Moyer continued. “All he did was blow snot. No tears.”
