A new movie inspired by the creative works of the legendary singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Prince, is in the works at Universal Pictures.
According to Variety, the film company has acquired the rights to a slew of Prince classics in an effort to create an original film musical inspired by his hits, with a fictional narrative.
Sources close to the new film have made it clear that the project is not a biopic, as that “angle had largely been covered by Prince’s 1984 star-making film “Purple Rain.” Instead, the new film will be “something original and out of the box,” similar to the likes of Universal’s “Mamma Mia.”
Troy Carter, the entertainment advisor of Prince’s estate will exectuive produce the project with Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group’s Jody Gerson, who is also the exclusive worldwide publishing administrator for Prince’s catalog.
