Mya recently shared her experiences and the benefits of abstaining from sex for seven years during an interview on Angela Yee’s Way Up. The talented singer, dancer, and actress discussed how celibacy transformed her mindset and life.
Mya emphasized that the main benefit of her celibacy was mental clarity. She explained, “Mental clarity. It shifted my mindset. It was no longer a focus. The rush to be in a relationship, the rush to be married, the rush to be in something because that’s what you’re taught to do — to have kids or to procreate. There’s a lot of pressure on women to be able to do that.”
Mya also reflected on societal pressures and the importance of self-love. “Why are we taught that we have to be taken or made an honest woman? Love is beautiful, and I think the world always needs more of it, but I think you must start with yourself. I have to start with self always, versus expecting from other sources. It was just reconditioning. It’s something that was necessary because it’s a very spiritual thing. You must be very selective if you want better results. That self-accountability started with me by shutting that part of my life off,” she added.
However, not everyone in the entertainment industry shares Mya’s perspective on celibacy. In May, Ice-T commented on Lenny Kravitz’s admission that he has been celibate for nearly a decade. Kravitz explained to The Guardian that his nine-year celibacy began after his last serious relationship.
Ice-T expressed his disbelief on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “9yrs without sex? F that BS. Weirdo shit,” although he later deleted the tweet. Despite deleting the tweet, he continued the conversation with fans, expressing his confusion about voluntary celibacy. “Shit’s Weird to me….. I love to Fuck. A lot,” he said.
While opinions on celibacy vary, Mya’s story highlights the personal and spiritual growth she experienced during her journey. Check out her interview clip on Angela Yee’s Way Up, starting at the 23:15 mark.
