As the National Anthem controversy dies down with a few players still involved in the movement, a professional cheerleader took a stand against police brutality and social injustices by taking a knee during “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Ahead of Thursday Night’s matchup between the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers, a woman from the 49ers cheer squad took a knee during the National Anthem.
However, the cheerleader’s identity has yet to be revealed.
In the meantime, according to the Business Insider, the cheerleader is the first ever to take a knee, as several cheerleaders explained last year that they feared losing their jobs if they were to join in.
“Since cheerleaders are often told how replaceable they are, they felt that they could very easily be fired for taking a stand,” Elle Magazine reported, at the time. “One pointed out that even a talented, well-known player like Kaepernick essentially lost his job for making a statement. Few cheerleaders would be willing to take that risk,” that is, until now.
Kudos to the cheerleader!
