An advocacy organization is cautioning individuals from ethnic backgrounds about visiting Florida.
The NAACP released a travel advisory for the state on Saturday. The statement cited their specific concerns over Governor Ron DeSantis’ efforts to eliminate Black history and impose limitations on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within Florida schools.
Shortly after DeSantis signed a new immigration law, LULAC issued a travel advisory for Florida. In addition, LULAC and the NAACP claims DeSantis’ administration are “hostile” towards their respective communities.
“Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals,” the NAACP said. “Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.”
Florida implemented a ban on critical race theory, that recognizes systemic racism as an integral part of American history and questions the ideologies that facilitated its growth.
DeSantis asserted that this concept would have a negative view of the country to children. He claims the concept portrays the country as fundamentally flawed, with institutions deemed illegitimate.
Additionally, he enacted legislation that prohibits teaching approaches implying privilege or oppression based on an individual’s race or skin color.
