A naked suspect, identified as 18-year-old Matthew Thomas Bernard, took police on a wild goose chase while on foot, after the murder of two women and a child.
According to Jeff Passan, a Major League Baseball Insider, the wife, and 1-year-old child of Blake Bivens, who is a pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, were among three people killed in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. His mother-in-law has also been reported to be one of the victims.
A neighbor reportedly found one person dead in the driveway on Tuesday, August 27, and after further investigation, they found another adult and the baby dead inside of the home.
WSET reported that officers responded to a home in Pittsylvania County at around 8 a.m. after a 911 call Tuesday and found three people dead, including two females and a child.
WSET reported that Bernard ran past reporters near a media staging area and attacked a church groundskeeper by putting his hands around his neck.
In the video released, you can see a police officer chasing Bernard down the street after apparently macing him and hitting him with a nightstick with no success of taking him down. At one point Bernard even turns to charge at the officer chasing him.
At around noon Tuesday, Bernard reportedly ran from a wooded area, and law enforcement was able to detain him, according to police.
The Tampa Bay Rays tweeted out about the unfortunate incident, sending their thoughts and prayers to Blake Bivens’ family. Police confirmed to WSET, that Bernard is being treated at a local medical facility. He’s facing three counts of first-degree murder.
