Nancy Pelosi has broken her silence following the vicious and devastating attack on her husband.
An intruder broke into the couple’s San Francisco townhouse early Friday morning and assaulted her 82-year-old husband, Paul, with a hammer. He suffered a shattered skull.
The House Speaker wrote in a statement: “a violent man broke into our family home, demanded to confront me and brutally attacked my husband Paul. Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop. We are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services, and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving.”
Nancy thanked her fellow members of Congress for their “prayers and warm wishes” that have helped Paul progress in his recovery as his condition improves. She ended her statement with a scripture from the Book of Isaiah.
On the day of the attack, the suspect, David DePape forced his way inside through the back door, brandishing the hammer, and was there to attack Nancy, who was away in D.C. at the time, TMZ reported. Paul was able to call 911 and left the line open so the operator could hear.
Police responded and were able to disarm the suspect. DePape was booked into the San Francisco County Jail for burglary, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and several other felonies.
