The NBA has banned Jontay Porter, a former two-way player with the Toronto Raptors after a league investigation found him guilty of multiple betting-related violations.
The investigation revealed that Porter disclosed sensitive personal health information to a known sports bettor before a game on March 20. This individual, along with another associate of Porter’s who was also an NBA bettor, placed a significant bet predicting Porter’s underperformance in that game.
Furthermore, the investigation uncovered that Porter had manipulated his own playtime to influence the betting outcomes in at least one game. On March 20, Porter played merely three minutes, citing illness, which coincided with suspicious betting patterns. Consequently, the bet placed on his performance, which involved a substantial $80,000 wager, was frozen and remains unpaid.
Between January and March 2024, while with the Raptors or their G League affiliate, Raptors 905, Porter placed 13 bets on NBA games, totaling over $54,000. These bets, which included wagers against the Raptors, did not involve games in which he participated, yet highlighted his extensive involvement in betting activities.
The irregular betting activities linked to Porter were flagged by licensed betting operators and an organization that monitors legal betting markets, prompting the NBA’s investigation. Although the investigation is ongoing and might lead to further findings, the league has already communicated its findings to federal prosecutors.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver emphasized the league’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its competitions, stressing the seriousness of Porter’s infractions and the necessity of a robust regulatory framework for sports betting. The league continues to collaborate with industry stakeholders to enhance safeguards against such violations.
“There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition for our fans, our teams and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment. While legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or abnormal activity, this matter also raises important issues about the sufficiency of the regulatory framework currently in place, including the types of bets offered on our games and players. Working closely with all relevant stakeholders across the industry, we will continue to work diligently to safeguard our league and game,” Silver said.
