NBA Youngboy is rebranding himself by converting to Mormonism and changing the focus of his lyrics.
In a new cover story with Billboard, the 23-year-old rapper opened up about living in Utah while on house arrest. During the interview, Youngboy revealed his plans for the future once his ankle monitor is removed.
The Louisiana rapper shared that he is planning to join the Church of Jesus Christ the Latter-day Saints. Youngboy’s decision came after Mormon missionaries arrived at his home last year. He initially turned them away but when the missionaries returned, the rapper had a change of heart.
“I wanted help very badly. I needed a friend and it hit me,” Youngboy recalled. “It was cool to see someone with a different mindset that had nothing to do with business or money. Just these wonderful souls.”
Youngboy also reflected on the negative impact his music had on some listeners.
“I was flooded with millions of dollars since the time I was like 16, all the way to this point in my life,” he added. “I woke up one morning and was like, d*mn, they got me. Look at the sh*t I don’t spoke about. Look at the sh*t I put in these people ears. Man, I feel very wrong about a lot of things. How many lives I actually am responsible for when it comes to my music? How many kids and people have got in a car or put this sh*t in their ears and actually went and hurt someone? And now, I’m sitting back like, d*mn, I can’t do it all in one day. But I promise to clean whatever I can clean. But it’s gonna take time.”
Nevertheless, Youngboy is still continuing music as he released eight albums this past year.
