Kamiyah Street, the starting point guard for Kennesaw State University’s women’s basketball team, was arrested Thursday following a nearly five-month-long investigation.

Street has been charged with murder for her role in the death of 21-year-old Nashiem Hubbard-Etienne, who was found dead in an Atlanta apartment complex on July 16th, with an apparent gunshot wound to the groin area. Street is one of five people charged in the murder that police are referring to as a “targeted attack.” However, it is unclear if Hubbard-Etienne was the intended target.

The 20-year-old senior, who averaged 21 points and 5 rebounds through the start of the season, has been “suspended indefinitely,” according to KSU’s assistant athletic director for communications, David Beall. She’s also been hit with several criminal charges including murder, 3 counts of felony murder, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, 2 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to TMZ.

The additional suspects charged in connection to this crime include 21-year-old Johnerton Gilstrap, 22-year-old Cortez Banks, and 20-year-old Tobias Wells. These three have been jailed for months, while a fourth suspect, 20-year-old Dontacus Brantley, is still on the run. While Fulton County prosecutors indicted all five back in October, it is unclear why it has taken authorities this long to arrest Street for her role in the murder.

In a statement to TMZ, prosecutors said, “The Atlanta Police Department identified Kamiyah Street by reviewing surveillance video captured during the homicide.”

“Upon questioning, Street admitted her presence and participation in the death of Hubbard-Etienne,” prosecutors continued, adding that, “Our independent investigation of the shooting and its circumstances clearly indicated Street’s involvement with the death. She was subsequently indicted for Felony Murder.”

The victim’s mother, Maiyannie Hubbard-Armster, spoke with Atlanta’s Channel 2 Action News, where she voiced her frustration with the amount of time it took to arrest Street, noting that she was able to play in KSU’s first four games of the season before being apprehended. “What are they going to do about this girl?” she said. “Why is she still able to breathe and enjoy life as if she did nothing?”

Investigators have yet to release the motive behind the shooting or the roles in which each suspect played in the killing.
