Nelly’s scheduled performance at Donald Trump’s inaugural ball has sparked considerable controversy. The backlash centers on the perception that his participation endorses a divisive political figure, though he says this is not the case.

During a chat with Willie D, Nelly expressed his surprise at the backlash, questioning why people would be upset with him putting on a show.
“I thought you was riding with me because I put on for my city,” he began, emphasizing his commitment to uplifting St. Louis and its community. He noted that he didn’t realize his fans expected him to align with their political views, adding, “I apologize. I didn’t know that I had to agree with your political choices.”
For the 50-year-old, performing at the inauguration is not a political statement but an acknowledgment of the presidency itself, calling it an “honor.”
“I respect the office. It don’t matter who is in office,” he explained. Drawing a parallel to the sacrifices of military personnel who serve regardless of leadership, he argued, “If they can put their life on the line for whoever is in office, I can damn sure perform for whoever is in office.”
Responding to accusations that his show props up a “white supremacist,” Nelly challenged critics to verify their claims. While acknowledging past allegations against Trump, such as discriminatory housing practices, Nelly urged for a broader perspective.
“Is he renting to [Black people] now? So nobody’s allowed to change, right?” he asked.
Nelly emphasized that people, including himself, are often judged for their past but deserve grace and the opportunity for growth.
“If my past was what was going to prevent me from winning today, I wouldn’t be here,” he said.
While Nelly admitted Trump has “some f**ked-up ways,” he avoided endorsing any political figure, stating, “That’s why I’m not telling you who to vote for.” Instead, he framed his performance as an acknowledgment of the presidency, not a campaign event.
“He’s the president of the United States. He’s not the candidate for the United States,” he concluded.
