In a candid conversation with Willie D on a YouTube stream, the “Country Grammar” rapper addressed the backlash, explaining that his decision wasn’t a political move but more of an acknowledgment of the presidency.
“I respect the office,” Nelly said. “This isn’t politics. The politics, for me, it’s over. He won. He’s the president. He’s the commander-in-chief of what I would like to say is the best country in the world.”
Additionally, Nelly also spoke on the criticism surrounding Trump’s racial allegations, pointing out former President Barack Obama being cordial with the president-elect during Jimmy Carter’s funeral.
And people actually cut off family and friends for these two parties 😂😂😂.
And here’s Obama and Trump chatting. Notice they didn’t cut each other off. One big club, folks. pic.twitter.com/SFqqk0Z1XM— Sabby Sabs (@SabbySabs2) January 9, 2025
“I don’t think Obama would sit there and chuck it up when he knows cameras is watching with a known racist,” he said. “I don’t think he would do it. I don’t think he would sit there and play buddy-buddy, chuck it up, with somebody who he really thought was a known racist or a Hitler.”
The conversation took an unexpected turn when Willie D questioned if anyone asked Nelly to perform for a “Klan rally,” suggesting that America is a “Klan country.” The statement brought on a chuckle from Nelly who responded, “Why would I go to a Klan rally? I don’t live in a Klan country.”
Nonetheless, Nelly’s decision to perform for a Trump event has brought on many negative comments from social media users. But, despite the naysayers, Nelly has made it clear that the criticism will not sway him.
