On Tuesday, Netflix announced that it would be ending its DVD mailing service after 25 years on Sept. 29, 2023.
The company said, “Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members, but as the business continues to shrink, that’s going to become increasingly difficult.”
The streaming service initially started mailing out DVDs in April 1998. In 2007, the company launched its online streaming and video service.
It’s been over ten years since its first DVD was sent out in a red envelope.
According to Netflix, they have amassed over 230 million paid subscribers for its streaming services and mailed over 5.2 billion DVDs.
“We feel so privileged to have been able to share movie nights with our DVD members for so long, so proud of what our employees achieved, and excited to continue pleasing entertainment fans for many more decades to come,” the company said.
On September 29th, 2023, we will send out the last red envelope. It has been a true pleasure and honor to deliver movie nights to our wonderful members for 25 years. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey, including this final season of red envelopes. pic.twitter.com/9lAntaL2ww
