Since 2016 Wanda Dench and Jamal Hinton have spent thanksgiving together all because of an accidental text.
And now Netflix will tell their story next year with the film “The Thanksgiving Text.” For those who haven’t heard of their story, Dench was getting her Thanksgiving guest list together when she accidentally sent an invite to Hinton, a stranger, who at the time was a high school senior. He replied asking who it was, Dench responded, “Your grandma 👵.”
The two eventually realized it was a mistake, but that didn’t stop Hinton from jokingly asking if he could “still get a plate tho” to which Dench responded, “Of course, you can. That’s what grandma’s do…Feed every one.”
Next thing you know, he and his girlfriend were spending Thanksgiving with Dench and her family. Their warm-hearted encounter was shared on social media and became a viral story that many have followed since it first happened.
Dench lost her husband to COVID-19 complications two years ago. Hinton, along with Dench’s family and close friends has helped her get through the loss, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution shared.
The two recently shared their excitement about Netflix’s decision to make a film about them.
“We are excited to share our story with the world. We hope it inspires more people to reach out and make connections that they wouldn’t ordinarily make,” Dench and Hinton said in a joint statement. “We are so blessed to find a genuine friendship brought together by God from a mistaken text message.”
