The Brooklyn Nets will retire Vince Carter’s No. 15 jersey to the rafters next Saturday, January 25th. The team announced this week that there will be multiple events before the game leading up to the celebratory moment.
A movie premiere will kick off the events next Thursday, January 23rd, with a special docuseries titled From Daytona Beach to Brooklyn, curated by Brooklyn Paramount. The red carpet premiere will feature the 90-minute movie, which includes interviews with former teammates, family members, and Vince himself. Once the screening is over, there will be a live Q&A discussion with Carter that evening as well.
On Friday morning, a special ceremony will be held for Carter at the Empire State Building, which will be lit in red, white, and blue. The number 15 will rotate on the landmark’s spire—a true honor that showcases the love Carter has garnered within the city.
The Hall of Famer will be the seventh player to have his jersey retired in Nets history, and the lucky No. 7 comes with some cool perks for fans in attendance. The first 10,000 fans at the game against the Miami Heat will receive a commemorative bobblehead. Fans will also have the chance to win a meet-and-greet with the Hall of Famer after the game, and limited-edition merchandise by Mitchell & Ness will be available inside and outside the arena.
Dedicating Carter’s jersey on a night when the Nets play the Heat—a team he created so many highlights against while playing for Brooklyn—only adds to the significance of the ceremony, which will take place at halftime. It’s a well-deserved honor, and when a former player can receive his flowers from an organization, it’s truly special.
