A Nevada mother is behind bars after leaving her two children in a hot room with no air conditioning, with one of the children dying.
Kemaya Taylor, 23, is accused of murder, child abuse, and child neglect after her 5-year-old dies.
According to People, authorities arrived at the scene on Monday at 7 p.m., where they found the two children locked inside of a bedroom.
The two-year-old child was handed over to Child Protective Services, but the older sibling died.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal states that authorities believe the child died from heat-related causes combined with abuse and neglect.
The Weather Channel recorded a high temperature of 107 degrees in Las Vegas on Monday.
Taylor’s landlord said that the young mother was having financial troubles.
“She was in a mess,” the unidentified landlord said. “Her hair was all a mess, the whole house was a mess, and she was packing. That’s when I said, ‘You know, I think it is not good you are all by yourself with two kids. You should get in touch with your family,’ and she said, ‘I have no one.'”
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is unable to divulge any information because of the state’s privacy laws for active criminal investigations.
Taylor was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday morning but did not show up. The publication noted that the court is appointing her a public defender.
Inmate records show that her preliminary hearing is now scheduled for July 15.
