The Georgia sheriff who reopened the investigation into Kendrick Johnson‘s death said he received new information about the case.
Johnson, who was 17, was found rolled up inside a gym mat eight years ago by classmates at the Lowndes High School. His death was ruled an accident, but Johnson’s parents suspected foul play. Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk sided with Johnson’s parents and reopened the case earlier this month.
Now, according to Paulk, the teen’s mother, Jackie Johnson, received an audio recording of someone admitting to Johnson’s death.
“They had a recording that they actually purchased from someone who said that it would be valuable as far as saying who possibly had committed the crime and change their situation,” the sheriff said.
According to Fox 5 Atlanta, officials will not be releasing the recording at this time and are working to verify the recording.
