Somebody’s gonna get fired! The social media person (or bot, whatever they use) for the New England Patriots accidentally tweeted a racial slur last night and before they could catch it, it was retweeted and screen shot for the world to see. Ahh, the beauty of technology!
Here’s what happened. The New England Patriots finally reached 1 million followers on Twitter & they decided to let their 1 millionth follower know by thanking them. The tweet read “Thanks for helping us become the first NFL team with 1 million followers! #1MillionPatriots” Unfortunately, here’s the problem. The 1millionth follower was a racist account named “IHATENlGGERSS”. Someone clearly dropped the ball. Now, this could have been the mistake of a social media intern, or maybe just a bot program to send out automated tweets. Either way, the Patriots knew they had to clean this up fast!
“We apologize for the regrettable tweet that went out from our account. Our filtering system failed & we will be more vigilant in the future,” the Patriots account tweeted an hour and a half after catching their mistake. Too bad there are screen shots.
How embarassing!
