Steph Curry has other talents besides basketball, and one of them just so happens to be interviewing legends. In his recent episode of the 15 Minutes from Home podcast, the Golden State Warriors champion released an exclusive interview clip featuring Nipsey Hussle.
Curry’s YouTube limited series, 5 Minutes from Home, featured a 2018 interview with the late rapper and left fans wanting more. In the recent episode of his new podcast, Curry delivers an extended version of the conversation they had three years ago. The two talk about growing up in South Central Los Angeles and how Nipsey used his upbringing to inspire all.
The basketball player asked Nipsey if he always had rapping and music on his mind. He says he became interested in the rap game by watching Tupac, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.
“…Just being from LA in the 90s, you gotta think Tupac was shooting videos on Crenshaw…so it wasn’t out of reach.” The hip-hop scene was on the rise and the hottest in California.
He then continues, “And then Death Row was at its pique when I was like six/seven years old, so it just felt accessible, it felt like we could do it.” Nipsey got into his music by rewriting over famous artists like Snoop Dog and Tupac. He says that he would use the same flow and beat then just rewrite lyrics over theirs.
Nipsey who’s real name is Airmiess Joseph Asghedom, talks about how his mom helped him out. She learned that he was interested in music and found a community center with a free studio.
Studio time was very expensive and still is.
The “Double Up” rapper tragically died in 2019. He was shot and killed in South Los Angeles near his clothing store, Marathon Clothing Company. After his passing, he went on to win two Grammys in 2020 for Best Rap Performance and Melodic Rap Performance.
