A biker rally in New Mexico turned deadly after gunfire broke out between rival gangs on Saturday. At least three people were killed, and five others were injured during the shootout.
Mayor Linda Calhoun confirmed that the incident was gang-related in a video posted by Questa del Rio News. None of the victims were local residents.
Officials said that the five people that were injured received medical care. One of the shooting victims was airlifted to a Denver hospital.
Calhoun said the shooters have been apprehended, and police did not feel there is any ongoing threat to the public. None of the gunmen have been identified.
The shooting happened during the 41st Annual Red River Memorial Motorcycle Rally. The event was expected to draw around 30,000 people to the area.
Following the incident, state police urged local businesses in the area of the shooting to remain closed through Sunday.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and the Phoenix field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is assisting state police.
“My thoughts are with the Red River community following this violent incident,” Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham tweeted. She noted that she has been in close contact with law enforcement and Calhoun.
I am in close contact with the mayor of Red River and law enforcement on the response to the shootings earlier today. Please continue to avoid the area and look for updates from @NMStatePolice.
