A New York official responding to a fatal hit-and-run later learned the victim involved was his son.
The incident occurred on Feb. 17. Citing Binghamton police responded to a hit-and-run call in the early morning. Tyler Beschorner, 29, was struck while walking on a highway.
The incident caused road closures, which meant Tyler’s father, Corey Beschorner, a New York State Department of Transportation employee, was called to the scene to assist, PEOPLE reported.
“This is one of our worst nightmares,” Corey told the outlet. “When we were setting up we were saying somebody’s world is going to be turned upside down tonight. I didn’t know it was mine or my family’s.”
Police are still searching for the vehicle involved.
A GoFundMe page said the victim was the father of a 7-year-old boy.
